We often discuss compassionate care in medicine from the perspective of physicians creating compassionate spaces for patient interactions. However, in order to practice compassion for patients, physicians need to be in a space of well-being themselves. You cannot pour from an empty cup, especially in a profession that is defined by entering the lives of people who are suffering with the intention to walk alongside them in their journey at a vulnerable point of their life.
